Sugrue 'The Trouble With Dreams' 2014

Sugrue Pierre, Sussex

When Sugrue Pierre 'Tghe Trouble With Dreams' 2010 scored 96/100 in Decanter Magazine in 2014, it was the highest score ever awarded by Decanter for an English Sparkling Wine. Since then, the following vintages of 2011 and 2013 have been awarded the same 96 points and 97 points respectively and rated 'Outstanding'!! Hence, this new 2014 vintage is an unmissable wine for Sugrue fans.

"From a small 1ha vineyard at Storrington Priory at the foot of the South Downs, some on chalk and some on sandy greensand, this wine is a great example of a classic Chardonnay and Pinot Noir blend. It has a backbone of acidity along with ripe Pinot fruit and a palate-pleasing level of dosage, helping to hit all the right spots. Ace winemaker Dermot Sugrue has certainly come up trumps with this wine from his own personal label, and produced a wine that while drinking well now, has the power to last for a lot longer.

"Fantastic! Fruit to the fore and huge length. Perfect!" Stephen Skelton MW

For more than a decade Dermot Sugrue has been the winemaker behind many of England’s best sparkling wine producers. In 2006, the same year he left Nyetimber to establish the winery at Wiston Estate, he planted a small vineyard at the foot of the South Downs. 2013 saw the first release of SUGRUE PIERRE - the 2009 'The Trouble With Dreams' - to wide critical acclaim. Matthew Jukes instantly placed it in his Top Five English Sparkling Wines in his Mail on Saturday column in May 2013 describing it as an "incredible, highly complex wine. With a tiny production and handmade feel throughout, this is a spellbinding wine and one which will woo everyone who tastes it."

With stocks of the 2009 selling out extremely rapidly, the follow-up 2010 vintage of SUGRUE PIERRE was launched in 2014. Jane MacQuitty writing in The Times described it's "lingering, bracing, lemon-biscuit flavours make it one of the best English sparklers yet." And then Decanter Magazine give it one of the highest scores ever achieved by an English sparkling. EeBria are delighted to have a small allocation of this remarkable wine to offer our customers. However, do not delay as this may sell out very quickly indeed...

Winemaker's notes on the 2014 vintage: Perfect flowering conditions in June/July 2014 set a fine crop. August was dry with very little disease pressure and ripening progressed beautifully throughout September, bringing excellent maturity. The final assemblage of 60% Chardonnay and 40% Pinot Noir was pressed in a traditional Coquard basket press and part-fermented in old barriques. Bottled July 2014, it was first disgorged in February 2018 at 6g/L dosage, 4 years after vintage. According to one very experience taster from Chamnpagne, it tastes like foie gras!!

All wines bought on EeBria are sent to you, by the winemakers, from the vineyard!
